ม้านั่งอเนกประสงค์ 

Multipurpose Bench

นี่คืองานชิ้นแรกที่ทุกคนที่มาเรียนงานไม้ที่นี่ต้องทำ เป็นม้านั่งที่อาจารย์เขียนแบบเองนับเป็นงาน signature ของอาจารย์ก็ว่าได้ (เป็นหนึ่งในชิ้นงานขายดีของที่นี่ มีคนทั่วไปเข้ามาที่แผนกเพื่อขอซื้อม้านั่งรุ่นนี้ไปใช้งานเป็นระยะๆ) ม้านั่งตัวนี้ต่อไม้แบบเข้าเดือยดั้งเดิม (mortise and tenon) ที่จริงอาจารย์ไม่ได้สอนชื่อภาษาอังกฤษหรอกหลังจากเริ่มเรียนฉันไปหาความรู้เพิ่มเอาเอง 

This is the first project that everyone who studies here must make. It’s a bench designed by Teacher and can be considered his "signature" piece (it’s one of the best-selling items here; people often walk into the department just to buy one). This bench uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery (actually, Teacher didn’t teach us the English terms; I went and looked them up myself after I started learning).

วัตถุประสงค์ของการเริ่มต้นด้วยงานชิ้นนี้เพื่อให้ผู้เรียนได้เรียนรู้กระบวนการส่วนใหญ่ที่จำเป็นในการทำงานไม้ทั่วไป ตั้งแต่การเพลาะไม้เพื่อเพิ่มความหนากับความแข็งแรงให้กับไม้ การใช้ power tool ต่างๆ เช่น การใช้โต๊ะเลื่อยวงเดือน (table saw) 

The objective of starting with this piece is for students to learn the majority of processes necessary for general woodworking. This includes panel lamination (gluing wood together) to increase thickness and strength, and using various power tools:

the table saw and miter saw for cutting and making tenons;

ใช้เครื่องไสชิด (jointer) ปรับไม้ให้ได้ฉากและตรง,

the jointer to square and straighten the wood;

ใช้สว่านแท่น (pedestal drill)

กับเราเตอร์ (router) เจาะรูเดือยกับเซาะร่องเพื่อใส่ไม้ระแนง,

and router to cut mortises (holes) and grooves for the slats;

ใช้เครื่องขัดกระดาษทรายทั้งแบบสายพาน (belt sander)

กับแบบสั่น (orbital sander) ขัดผิวชิ้นงานให้เรียบเนียน, 

and orbital sanders for smoothing surfaces;

ใช้ทริมเมอร์ (trimmer) เจียนขอบชิ้นงาน 

the trimmer for chamfering edges; 

และการเคลือบผิวชิ้นงานด้วยซีลเลอร์ (sealer) 

and finally, coating the piece with sealer 

กับแลคเกอร์ (lacquer) 

and lacquer.

เนื่องจากเป็นงานชิ้นแรกของฉันจึงมีข้อบกพร่องมาก เช่น ใช้เราเตอร์ยังไม่คล่องทำให้รูเดือยดูไม่เรียบร้อย (ถึงจะมองไม่เห็นตอนประกอบไปแล้วก็เถอะแต่ก็ยังรู้สึกไม่ดี) 

Since it was my first piece, there were many flaws. For example, I wasn’t fluent with the router yet, making the mortises look messy (even though you can’t see them once assembled, I still felt bad). 

การเก็บรายละเอียดส่วนที่ไม่จำเป็นมากไปทำให้เสียเวลาเกินความจำเป็น ตอนขัดผิวท็อปด้วยเครื่องขัดสายพานเผลอขัดลบมุมที่เจียนไว้ทำให้ต้องใช้ทริมเมอร์เบอร์ที่โค้งมากกว่าครั้งแรกเจียนทับลงไปอีกรอบ (โชคยังดีที่ตอนเอากลับมาใช้ที่บ้านแมวน้ำบอกว่าโค้งมากๆ แบบนี้ดีแล้วนั่งสบาย) 

I also wasted time obsessing over unnecessary details. When sanding the top with the belt sander, I accidentally sanded off the chamfered edge I had already trimmed, so I had to use a trimmer bit with a larger curve to trim it again. (Luckily, when I brought it home, Littleseal said the extra curve made it very comfortable to sit on). 

และความผิดพลาดที่ร้ายแรงสุดคือฉันใจร้อนผสมแลคเกอร์ข้นไปทำให้ทาแล้วเป็นรอยแปรงต้องเอากระดาษทรายขัดออกแล้วทาใหม่ถึง 2 รอบ แลคเกอร์มีแบบเงากับด้าน ฉันเลือกด้านแต่ดันทาออกมาแล้วเงาเป็นรอยแปรงได้ น่าอนาถใจจริงๆ ฉันนึกว่าตัวเองใจเย็นกว่าตอนวัยรุ่นมากแล้ว มารู้ว่าที่จริงตัวเองยังใจร้อนอยู่ก็ตอนขับรถกับตอนมาเรียนงานไม้นี่แหละ 

The most serious mistake was being too impatient and mixing the lacquer too thick, leaving brush marks. I had to sand it all off and repaint it twice. Lacquer comes in matte and glossy; I chose matte, but somehow applied it until it was glossy with brush marks (so pathetic). I thought I was calmer than I was in my teens, but I realized while driving and studying woodworking that I am still quite hot-headed.

แต่โดยรวมถือเป็นผลงานที่น่าพอใจเพราะอาจารย์ตรวจแล้วให้ผ่านเลยไม่ต้องกลับไปแก้อีก  

Overall, however, it was a satisfactory result because Teacher passed it without requiring any fixes. 

ฐานม้านั่งได้ฉากไม่โยกคลอน ท็อปกับพนังทั้ง 2 ชิ้นแนบกันสนิทไม่มีช่องโหว่ (มีคนที่อาจารย์ตรวจแล้วไม่ให้ผ่าน เช่น ขาโยกคลอน ท็อปกับพนังไม่แนบสนิทกันมีช่องว่างมากจนเห็นชัด ต้องแก้แล้วให้อาจารย์ตรวจใหม่ด้วย)  

The base was square and didn’t wobble, the top and side panels (aprons) fit tightly with no gaps. (There were others whom Teacher didn't pass, due to wobbly legs or large gaps between the top and aprons, requiring them to fix it and re-submit).

 

นอกจากม้านั่งตัวแรกที่ฉันทำแล้วขนกลับมาใช้เองแล้วตลอดการเรียนฉันกับนักเรียนคนอื่นยังต้องช่วยกันทำม้านั่งรุ่นนี้อีกหลายตัว เพราะมีชิ้นส่วนที่นักเรียนรุ่นพี่หลายคนไม่ยอมทำให้เสร็จ อาจารย์เลยให้ทุกคนช่วยกันทำต่อเพื่อจะได้ไม่กลายเป็นไม้เหลือทิ้ง (และมีบางส่วนเป็นการช่วยเตรียมชิ้นส่วนบางชิ้นให้กับนักเรียนรุ่นต่อๆ ไปด้วย) 

Aside from the first bench I made and brought home, throughout the course, the other students and I had to help finish several more of these benches because previous students hadn't finished them, Teacher had us complete them so the wood wouldn’t be wasted (and partly to help prepare parts for future students).

 

ปัจจุบันฉันเอาม้านั่งตัวนี้มาใช้นั่งกินข้าวกับแมวน้ำน้อย 

Currently, I use this bench to sit and eat dinner with Little Seal.
